Anne-Marie Eischen and Sarah Shiflett became friends through their shared interest in gardens and the benefits of engaging with growing things.  Sarah’s interest in native plants and improving conditions for pollinators was complementary to Anne-Marie’s fascination with historical plants.  Believing that practicing horticulture links us with nature, and wanting to reconnect with others in this digital age they began looking around for an opportunity for a civic project.

Located on the corner of the 47th Street and LaGrange Road, the Vial House, is the home of the LaGrange Area Historical Society.  Inside, there are special exhibits that highlight the Society's collection of period costumes and upstairs are files and archives which hold information on every home in LaGrange and LaGrange Park.  The Vial House, built in 1874, is the gateway into the Historic District of LaGrange and has a significant green space adjacent to the Museum.  Having worked with the Society through volunteering opportunities and attending fundraising events,
Anne-Marie and Sarah approached the Society’s Board about raising funds to create a garden.  The garden, a mix of native and historically important plants, will be a place where members of Common Ground can learn sustainable horticultural practices and teach them to others.
